The digital era is moving faster than the power grid was ever designed to handle. As Artificial Intelligence and advanced manufacturing drive an unprecedented surge in demand, a singular bottleneck has emerged: Time-to-Power.
At LandGate, in collaboration with our partners at KPMG, we are proud to announce our support for the EPRI DCFlex framework. EPRI DCFlex is a revolutionary industry shift that moves us away from lengthy development timelines toward a scalable, standardized future.
The Challenge: A System at Capacity
Traditionally, utilities have had to model every new data center as a "black box," assuming it will pull maximum power 100% of the time. This leads to:
Lengthy Interconnection Timelines: Uncertainty that stalls critical infrastructure for years.
Lack of Transparency: Utilities cannot see what flexibility a load can provide, and developers don't know which capabilities the grid actually needs.
High Costs: Repeated custom modeling increases study time, expense for all parties, and a slower speed to market.
The Solution: The DCFlex Standardized Framework
The DCFlex initiative introduces a "shared language" for the industry. By classifying large loads based on their performance, rather than just their technology, we can streamline interconnection and improve grid reliability.
The new DCFlex Flexibility Classes can help our clients navigate this transition:

Class | Capability Description |
Class A: Critical Peaking | Can respond to rare energy scarcity events lasting 5 hours or less. |
Class B: + Peak | Can respond to frequent energy scarcity events lasting 5 hours or less. |
Class C: + Prolonged | Includes A and B capabilities, plus response to prolonged events up to 24 hours. |
Class D: /+ Fast | Includes A and B capabilities, plus fast response with short notification times. |
Class E: Fully Dispatchable | Provides a comprehensive combination of peaking, prolonged, and fast response. |

Why DCFlex Standardization Matters Now
Standardization is the key to speed. By using these transparent performance expectations, we can:
Streamlined Interconnection: Increased speed to market, reduce the need for repeated, bespoke modeling.
Optimize Siting: Align large loads with locations where their specific flexibility unlocks existing grid headroom.
Preserve Reliability: Ensure the grid remains stable even as we integrate massive new loads.
Our Commitment
LandGate, with the partnership of KPMG, are committed to bridging the gap between digital infrastructure and the power system. By leveraging the DCFlex framework, we help our clients design for flexibility, reduce deployment risk, and most importantly: get to power faster and increase ROI.
